In this article we will go over upgrading the PowerStore OS and drive firmware and the best practices around this
You will need a Dell login to be able to get the PowerStore OS from the Dell Downloads website
for recommended versions, I would suggest using Dell’s PowerStore OS Matrix here
As an example, 3.6.1.3 is the version in bold, and is their recommended target version for production systems
Version 4 is perfectly stable, and isnt bad, however for production environments I would usually opt for the recommended version
Important – By continuing you are agreeing to the disclaimer here
First we need to open a maintenance window From settings in the right of the GUI, the Support/Disable Support Notifications
Select the PowerStore and modify the window for at least 4 hours
Then we need to run the health checker, which can be downloaded from Dell support for your PowerStore to check for any issues
You will need to log into your Dell account, which should have download permissions for your PowerStore
And this can be uploaded to the PowerStore for a check
You can upload it from Settings, in the top right, then upgrades, and upload package, then select it and install it, this will take around 5 mins, this is always non disruptive, for v4 its under more actions
This will go through and run everything it needs, it can be viewed from the jobs
It should be all clear when done, if not you’ll need to address any issues
Then we need to run a system check from Monitoring/System Checks
Then download the upgrade package for your version you are upgrading too, eg 4.0.0.1
You can find this on support.dell.com and adding your PowerStore Serial Number, and signing in again
And then upload that here, under Settings, on the right, then Cluster/Upgrades, and Upload package, which for v4 is under More Actions as shown
Once all the checks are ok, click the package and then upgrade
Click continue here, as we have already checked this
And upgrade now
You may also find there are drive firmware updates for the PowerStore, you can download that from Dell Support, no login needed
If you havent upgraded this before, install the latest, if you have, download the one for your release as there isnt a way of checking in the PowerStore if this matches your existing firmware, if you run the health check and there are no issues, you should be fine
Upload the firmware like before, click it and run a health check
Once thats done and clear like so
Run an upgrade
Then click upgrade now
